February 2009

Dear Fisherman,
What a year we had in 2008. The fishing was incredible and our new venture of Duck Hunting was a success. Fishing Started out in May with an unbelievable run of Stripers and Fluke. We had Big Bass and Big Fluke right from the get go.2008 saw the best Fluke season ever. The 201/2” size limit that appeared to be out of bounds to start actually proved out to be a winner. No we didn’t catch our limit every day and like always some days the fish were elusive, but we always managed a good mess of keepers and remember a keeper was about a 4 pound fish. The pile of fillets was always impressive. Before I get into a month by month synopsis, I have to tell you 2008 saw absolutely unbelievable Striped Bass fishing. We caught big fish everywhere we went.
We also lost our longest customer last year . Many of you heard me speak of George Dietz, what a great guy. He wasn’t my first customer but he fished with me the first year and was a regular ever since. that’s 40 years ago. A great fisherman, always a gentleman and my friend. He will surely be missed.
In June we found great Striper and Fluke and the start of the offshore season with terrific Shark Fishing by Father’s Day week end. The Sharks were close too. A short run to the 1st finger was all you had to do to have constant action all day. Most of our Sharking adventures were combined with Striper fishing. That way our anglers always had good eating to take home. June also showed us incredible Fluke fishing. Keith Rietma and the boys from Ringwood, NJ really showed us how to do it on June 29th. Catching their limit of the biggest kind of Fluke. We had this body of fish at North Grounds and caught them there for at least two weeks.
The Fluking in July stay hot, but if Fluke wasn’t your thing we had Porgy added to our box. The inshore fishing was great. We caught plenty of big Stripers both around the point and sometimes venturing to Block Island to catch our limit. Sharking stayed constant thru July but now as the water warmed there was plenty of Makos to be caught. We were fishing just a little east of the 1st finger, only 18-20 miles from the Point. Back inshore the porgy fishing was as good as you would like it Constant action of big fish, many 2-3 pound porgies came over the transom, if you combine your limit of Stripers with your limit of Scup you’ve got a lot of good eating.
August and September were a mirror image of each other. Great bottom fishing and the Stripers were building up for the fall run. I don’t even want to mention Tuna fishing but I have to tell you the truth. It was almost non existent. Fortunately for us anglers on the Windy were flexible and either stayed inshore for the Striper fishing or we combined the Stripers with Shark fishing. The Fluking ended on Labor Day as always, but now we added great Sea bass fishing. We had one helluva run of Sea Bass at block Island. The High light of the year came on Sept. 13 when 85 years young, George Rossi of Limerick, PA Caught the largest Striped Bass caught in Montauk last year. A 55 pound monster. Congratulations George! This whopper was the 30th Striper over 50 pounds landed by anglers on the Windy. And jut to prove it wasn’t a fluke the following week end Rob Reilly, had one of the top three days of Striped Bass fishing that I have ever seen. We started out the morning at Great Eastern where the action was the day before without a bite. Left there and headed for the Elbow where we found a pile of Bass of the biggest kind. We needed 10 for our limit, and the smallest Striper we brought back to the dock was 38 pounds, with two of them bottom out a 50 pound scale on the boat. It was one of the most impressive catches I’ve ever seen. Nine slobs over 40 pounds, Unbelievable! During the entire month of September the offshore Sharking was scary with the biggest Dentuso’s there for the catching . These were Blue Sharks and Makos of 250 pounds or better, it was Sharking at it best.
The off shore fishing was over for us in October and we stayed inshore for Montauk’s famous Fall Run of Stripers. As always Montauk lived up to its reputation. It was the finest kind. All of the rips and lumps were alive with Stripers. It just dose not get any better than that, after catching our limit we would either run over to Block Island for the Sea Bass and Porgies or head up to Fisher Island or the Rhode Island shore for Black fish. The Black fishing was the best ever. Plenty of big fish.
In November the Bassing was tough at times but the Blacks made up for it. Around Thanksgiving the Herring showed up right on schedule and angler experienced some of the most exciting fishing there is. Drifting live Herring thru the outer rips. If we had six fisherman on board, six rods would go down.
All in all it was a great year of fishing and I would like to thank everybody who fished with us that made it the year of years. The telephone is ringing and I’m getting lots of E-mails about the up coming season. October is almost gone already. Give me a call and don’t miss out on another great year.
Sincerely;
Capt. Jack Passie
